Immigrants who became eligible for their permanent resident status by marrying a US citizen will get a conditional Green Card that is valid for a two year period. During this time, immigration authorities may conduct investigations to ensure that the marriage is not fraudulent. A few months prior to the expiration date, the couple must apply to have the condition removed from the Green Card, making its holder an unconditional permanent resident.
An alien who married a US citizen and has permanent residence status for 3 years is eligible to apply for citizenship. One must prove that they have been physically present in the United States for a minimum of 1½ years out of the three year period. Also, competency in English, knowledge of American history and of current events needs to be demonstrated.
